EE British Academy Film Awards

Bluman Associates + Stout Studios produce visual experience for the red carpet at this year’s EE BAFTA Awards.

Working in collaboration, Bluman Associates and content creation agency Stout Studios, provided the content and AV design for the red carpet visuals at the prestigious 2018 EE BAFTA Awards.

This year, Bluman Associates designed a 3D array of semi transparent screens that cleverly framed the entrance to London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall. Utilizing disguise 3D pre-visualization software, the team modeled the screen and content design extensively, resulting in full client sign off before the team headed to site in the icy February weather.

As early adopters of the gx series + Notch workflow, Stout Studios built the show entirely in Notch. The real-time generative content design allowed the team to make colour correction and grading changes onsite, quickly and easily. Powered by a disguise gx 1 rack, the visuals engaged both the celebrity and broadcast audience alike, contributing to another successful ceremony for the British Film and Television industry.

London’s Royal Albert Hall become host to yet another iconic event, the EE British Academy Film Awards. West Design & Production collaborated with Bluman Associates and TSL Rigging to provide international talent, guests and the television audience with a cutting edge, visual spectacular on the red carpet.

The new production design included 62 low-resolution LED screens of different shapes and sizes, accurately rigged in a 3-dimensional space. The large memorial situated in the main entrance influenced the design, which resulted in a more geometric, eye catching visual experience. This allowed for the use of a more tangible screen surface, as opposed to the scenic LED panels that had been used in the past

“The disguise system was integral to our planning and approval process. It’s a system that facilitates the creative workflow we require and has unique features that allowed us to map the content across all 62 screens in 3D, this would be difficult to achieve with other motion graphics tools”

Due to the sculptural aspect of the design, the content needed to be created so it could be viewed and enjoyed from all angles. However, the best seat in the house was saved for audiences at home, with the main camera shot focusing all attention on the best of British talent, as they made their way across the red carpet and up famous stairs of the Royal Albert Hall.

Incorporating VR into the mix, Bluman Associates were able to previsualise the design using disguise software, and with the use of VR goggles allowed clients EE and BAFTA, to get a tangible and realistic sense of the experience before sign off.

“Our focus was to create a fully integrated 3-Dimensional workflow from start to finish, which we achieved. Working with West Design and Production is always a pleasure as they are a very creative team, open to innovation and trying new ideas,” says Bluman.
